Art

Intent
It is important for us that our pupils are given opportunities to explore their creative sides by experimenting and developing their own works of art, using a wide range of materials, media and techniques. We aim for high quality work, and strive to provide a creative environment where children can reach their full potential, celebrating personal achievements and recognising the strengths of themselves and of others. We believe that all children have an artist within, and encourage our pupils to explore their own artistic paradigm through learning about a variety of creators and finding their own interpretations of artwork they create and come across.

Implementation

The teaching and learning of Art is based on the National Curriculum and is taught through a scheme called Kapow.  Children begin using this scheme in key stage 1 and build on their skills and prior knowledge as they move into key stage 2.  Each lesson includes a strong vocabulary focus so that children become familiar with technique names and the ‘language of art’.

Art is taught as a discrete subject, alternating half-termly with Design Technology. Pupils explore and use a variety of media and materials, and skills are taught to build technique progressively.  While focussing on skills such as sketching, painting, colour mixing, sculpture and collage, famous artists are explored to enhance pupils’ cultural capital. Children are taught and encouraged to thoughtfully critique and evaluate their own work and that of others.

Pupils learn about great artists and designers and understand how art reflects and shapes our history.  They become confident and proficient in a variety of techniques and have opportunities to develop their interests and curiosity through skill-progression and knowledge-progression and the opportunity to ask questions and demonstrate their skills in a variety of ways.

Impact
Children at Rayleigh Primary School enjoy their art lessons. Their work is celebrated and pupils and staff are proud to see children’s artwork on display around the school.  Pupils develop in confidence and enthusiasm, and are keen to learn new skills and techniques, to work hard and perfect taught skills and techniques. Through our Art provision, children are equipped with the knowledge and skills to enable them to progress with their love and appreciation of art in Secondary school and beyond.
