Reading & Phonics
At Rayleigh Primary School, reading is a top priority and a key driver for our entire curriculum. We believe that robust, engaging phonics education is paramount and we deliver this through systematic Jolly Phonics sessions from Nursery until pupils have secured their decoding skills. It is our intention that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils will be able to read fluently and with confidence in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education.
Our reading curriculum and the varied texts explored and shared in each year group will incite a personal love of reading in all children as they engage with a stimulating range of texts from a variety of genres in both fiction and non-fiction. Through this curriculum, children will develop and nurture the essential skills of word reading and comprehension.
We value reading as a key life skill, and are dedicated to enabling our pupils to become keen, lifelong readers. As such, our holistic approach to the teaching of reading focuses on the enjoyment as well as the mechanics of reading.
