Research - Creativity, PSHCE, Science.

Rayleigh Primary School, in rejecting to use a series of subject specific thinking programmes, believes that by encouraging children to find out, discover, experiment and justify themes across subjects, we are encouraging the skills of research of increasing value in the ‘Knowledge Revolution’.

1. Transferable Skills.

Traditionally, the theory of transferable skills postulated that a child taught skills in a given area, such a history, would use the same skills in another area, such as geography. Rayleigh Primary takes the position that transferable skills are not automatic to the child. We need to teach key skills in different contexts to allow the child time to recognise how a skill can be appropriate to more than one subject. We see research as the unit or faculty to deliver these skills.

2. Independent Reading Skills

At Rayleigh Primary school we want to develop Reading Skills to make reading enjoyable, interesting and informative. We will offer a wide range of media to achieve the following:

Pupils will be able to

  • Select suitable sources for research.
  • Use a wide range of media to make presentations for a variety of purposes and audiences.
  • Use research to support recording and expressive work.
  • Use reading skills to further understanding of information that has been retrieved and processed.
  • Be able to check information and results for accuracy.
  • Know that information can be found from many different sources.
  • Know that information can be found in many different forms.
  • Know that information is for many different purposes.

3. Discovery Skills

We will offer pupils the opportunities to develop, their discovery skills to enable them to achieve the following:

  • Use research to support problem solving.
  • Use I. T. for communication, investigation and control.
  • Handle information from Primary and Secondary sources.
  • Compare the use of I.T. with other sources of information.
  • Explore the use of computer systems and control technology.
  • Decide on the suitability of sources.
  • Know that there are various methods of communication.
  • Know that there are various ways to access information.

4. Computer Literacy

Every pupil is entitled to become a confident and competent user of computers. Every learner will be encouraged to use the ICT resources as an information source, a processor

and a presentation tool. ICT will be across curricular theme throughout the school. Pupils will be encouraged to access the ICT resources whenever appropriate in order to develop their work.

Pupils will need to be able to;

  1. Use a variety of equipment to carry out functions.
  2. Become discerning in the use of ICT.
  3. Assess the value of ICT .
  4. Use ICT confidently to communicate and handle information.
  5. Develop the basic skills of handling the machine and working with the following formats.
    • Text
    • Number and logic
    • Sound
    • Graphics
    • Tables and charts
    • Information
