PSHCE at Rayleigh Primary School targets the beliefs of children. It attempts this through ‘Thinking skills’ based around good open questioning, debate and developing reflection in children.
PSHCE is the place to talk.
The role of talk can be defined as either constructing or clarifying meaning. When we talk we don’t just say what is in our mind, talking shapes what is in our mind. In PSHCE we expect children to work in pairs and groups to discover what matters to us as a community. This finds specific voice in our School and Class Councils.
Why we have School and Class Councils.
Both School and Class Councils are timetabled events that debate how we should resolve difficulties we experience in the school. We expect a high level of debate and we encourage this through Philosophy for Children.
Philosophy for Children.
Philosophy for Children delivered through our Learning to Learn boards, seeks to teach children how to ask questions that challenge values and beliefs, best delivered through a stimulus such as a picture, an object or a quote. Content.
As in all areas there is specific content we need to impart to children. In PSHCE the purpose of this is to give them the basis upon which to make up their own minds. PSHCE is not targeted at gaining agreement to the teacher’s or a published view of a subject. It is targeted as allowing children to come to an agreement. However, we are mindful that facts are portrayed as such.
