Homework:
Throughout the autumn term homework will consist of daily reading practice and weekly spellings.

Research homework will be set for the geography module on Islands.

Reading:

Guidance for parents.

Ideally, spend 10 to 15 minutes each evening with your child enjoying book sharing time, before they and you get too tired. Read the book to your child and when they know the storyline they can then read it back to you. (This becomes less necessary after green shelf.) Talk about the pictures, action, and characters. Stop half-way through and consider what could happen next in the story- predictions do not have to be correct, just possible. Date the record book and write a comment each time your child reads. Your child may need to read the book again if you think it necessary. The book can be swapped every day. Longer books may take several days to read. As children develop their reading skills they can begin to practise silent reading sometimes, but you will still need to ask questions about the story to ensure that they understand what they are reading and to develop their comprehension skills.

Most importantly reading should be a happy experience for all.

Research:

Research homework is set once a term. It is intended that you support your child, helping them to find out information from the internet, library, travel brochures, and other available resources.Children should be encouraged to present their work carefully and to write using their own words. They should not copy directly from a book or website, without understanding the content of the information. They will be asked to talk about their project at school, when the work is complete. They may include drawings, photographs, maps, and relevant diagrams. It is good practice to include a contents page and possibly an index. A bibliography would enhance their work and show the variety of sources consulted.

Spellings:

Spellings are given out each Friday (except in exceptional circumstances) and will be tested the following Thursday. Five spellings are given weekly. If your child spells them correctly they will receive the same five and five new ones. If they struggle no new spellings will be be given. Your child will therefore progress at his/her own speed. At the beginning of each half term we will begin at 5 again, so that the list remains a manageable size.

We suggest you help your child learn their spellings using a 'Look, Say, Cover, Write, Check' method. From time to time it is helpful to return to the spellings from the previous half term to check that they have been remembered.

Thank you for your help and support with homework. If you encounter problems or have queries please speak to the class teacher.
