Year 5 - Home | Curriculum | Homework | Trips | Children

Welcome to Year 5

In Year 5 the children are expected to set an example to the younger children of the school. This applies to the way they behave around the school and in the playground; their willingness to work hard; and in their appearance.

The children are encouraged to become more independent and take more responsibility for their own work and learning.  Year 5 pupils have the opportunity to become Buddies or Pals, helping and supporting the younger children in the playground.

Support

During the year there are groups your child might be directed towards, to support their learning.  This may be for phonics, booster reading, writing, mathematics or gifted and talented activities.  Staffs involved are Mrs. Thorn (LSA), Mrs. Holloway (LSA), Mrs. Clark (Teacher) or Year 5 teaching staff.

We would also ask if there are any parents able to give an afternoon on a regular basis to hear children read, we would be very grateful

.

The Daily Routine

Each day starts with either a morning thinking activity, handwriting or work to finish off.  The children are given a copy of the timetable in September and encouraged to be prepared for each day’s lessons.

Pencil Cases

The children may bring their own coloured pencils, pens, highlighters and other items of stationary to school in a regular sized pencil case. Handwriting pens must be black ink and of a handwriting style (not ballpoint).

Water Bottles

The children are allowed to drink water throughout the day. This should be in a clear plastic bottle and refreshed daily.  Please remember to replace the bottle regularly to avoid germs building up.

Reading Journals

The children in Year 5 have been issued with reading journals in which they record any reading they do in school or at home. The children have the opportunity to read quietly after lunch each day and are encouraged to read daily at home. Most children will discuss their reading with an adult weekly. In Year 5, children are encouraged to discuss their books in a reflective way - why did they choose the book? Who is their favourite character and why? Would they recommend the book to a friend?
