Day 1
Everyone has a surname (for younger readers that’s your last name). Many of these appeared during the Tudor era. If your surname was ‘Smith,’ your ancestor’s job would have been a Blacksmith, Goldsmith, Silversmith or an Ironsmith. So say their name was Charlie, they would be known as Charlie the Smith. Over a period of time, the ‘the’ would be dropped and he would become, Charlie Smith. If he had a son, say his name was Will, he would be known as Will the Smiths son, his name would then become Will Smithson.
