Day Two

We visited 5KD, their teacher Mrs Dunt (who was dressed as a Tudor) was telling them about the longbow. She was wearing protective gear. Including an Air-brace. The arrows were so sharp that, if 3 men lined up facing the one in front an arrow could kill them all in one shot. A full grown man could shoot twelve arrows in a minute.

Mrs Dunt’s shoes (which were made out of leather) had a lining that was made out of sheepskin, to keep her feet warm while she was working in the woods, at Kentwell Hall. She was also talking about the lack of medicines in those times.

While we were there, we interviewed a boy, called Henry (no, not Henry VIII). He told us that his year-group were making pouches, so they could take them to Kentwell Hall.  They were allowed to put a design of their choice on the pouch such as: roses, swords and bows.

Down by the tents we visited 6DEM during their maths lesson. They were estimating, then measuring the size of the Tudor tents using the radius (using a trundle wheel and metre sticks).

Later, at the tents, the year fours were told that some of them were going to be chosen to be King Henry’s personal guards. He will be coming to Rayleigh Primary School on Friday. The year fours needed to practise a drill to show the King their skills. During this session, they were also learning the names of the weapons and how to use them.

‘The Bill’ is a weapon which you can use in three different ways. Firstly, you could just easily stab someone, secondly, you could hook someone by the neck and lastly you would be able to bring your opponent to the ground by tripping them up. Year four, were using ‘the Bill’ and many other varieties of long, pointy weapons, to carry out their drill.
