The School Pond

Since we have been an Eco School we have been developing a pond at our school field in Spring Gardens. The pond has been designed and installed by the Eco-group and we have been supported by some outside agencies who have provided some funding and advice. Developing the pond has helped to improve the environment at Spring Gardens, creating new habitats for wildlife and providing us with an excellent resource to help develop our science work.

The pond was looking very beautiful in the spring and early summer. Children reported seeing Frogs, Dragon Flies, Water Scorpions and lots more insects. In the vicinity we found a Privet Hawk Moth and a considerable number of butterflies.

At the moment we are very short of water and hoping for a little rain, as the pond has had to be topped up during the dry summer.

We now have a platform for pond dipping and some more of the fence has been painted in the school holiday. We are hoping to complete the job very soon.

Mrs Crowe, Mrs Bass, and Mr Hack have been very busy helping to look after the pond and trying to improve it.

Next we need to plant around the fence and inside the area to provide more cover for wildlife. We also need to think about the different species that we want to encourage to our pond and surrounding area and make sure that we provide welcoming habitats.
